Construction

continues. Bit of an update post-Olympics.

Work, work, work. I have been quite busy starting up my new company, Games Academy Vancouver. I am CEO and co-founder, together with Thomas, who owns a couple of schools in Germany.

Tons of work, most of it cutting through the red tape the government throws at you when you want to open a school. But I have to say, they really did a terrific job on documenting their needs and processes. I have rarely seen anything so clear and efficient from a governing body. Still, tons of paper to be produced =)

The cool thing is, I am my own boss (which includes answering to the majority shareholder, which is my partner in the company), and it feels great. The weight on my shoulders of being responsible for the company and the money of the investors is counter balanced by the freedom and fun it brings being truly responsible. Something I did not yet find in any company I was an employee at.

Check out www.games-academy.ca soon, for updates on how we do.

To balance the brain work I picked up some building again. Pics of that below.

Rock on,

K.

2010 Victory Ceremony

Got lucky and catched 2 tix to the Victory Ceremony. Cool thing was that Germany got Gold, so I got to stand up and sing along the anthem (at least the bits I know).

I think thats the first time I actually did that, and I will look up and learn the lyrics now, even if its just for an occasion like this :)

The light show they put on in BC Place is really fantastic, only the sound guy today kinda sucked, it was really flat and weird.

It’s been fun seeing the athletes get their (gigantic) medals, and they do a nice job with the live coverage from Whistler. If you go to BC Place you see all the medal ceremonies up there too live, nice.

Tomorrow I try to go over to the North Shore to have a look at the Krusenstern, the russian Tallship. I have been on this ship at the age of 6 together with my parents, back in East Germany. It is going to be a weird feeling going back and on it, but I really want to do it.

Aside of that, we probably check out Saxony House one more time, if we can manage before it closes. Since I am back home in a month anyway, the cravings are being kept under control pretty well. =)

Olympic greetings,

K.

Vancouver 2010

The Olympics are in town. After much consideration I decided to enjoy them while they last. Nobody really knows right now what impact the event, and its roughly 6 Billion $ cost, will have on the city’s finances (and its residents through future tax hikes and funding cuts). Nevertheless, the games are here, so lets roll with it.

It probably is a once in a lifetime that I live in the host city for an event of that scale. The transformation of the city is quite obvious and pretty cool to watch. The streets are full with people and the buzz feels similar to New York or any other big city. I like it. I also like the fact that it’s going to be back to “normal” in a month or so =)

There’s a bunch of houses for all kind of different nations, areas etc., and we started discovering them over the last couple of days. The coolest one yet for me was the Saxony house. Feels like home, and I will be back there as often as I can. German Haus in Gastown is a ripoff and I wouldn’t recommend it. There’s so much to do and see these days, the official iPhone app for 2010 really comes in handy. It’s an exceptionally well done piece of software and I can totally recommend it. Get it HERE.

The weather is unreal for February, the cherries are in full bloom and it looks like winter is over for good. Let’s keep it that way =)

On the business front things are shaping up nicely, and it looks like 2010 is going to be a very busy year. Bring it on.

Check back soon for more pics from the sportiest city in the world right now.

Olympic greetings, Kay
